Stories Around the Lake- Interviewee: Sherri France By: Tori France
Mrs. Sherri France grew up in Cherry Valley, New York which is just a little outside of Cooperstown, New York. She graduated from Cherry Valley High School, and then went to college at Morrisville for two years and SUNY Poly for another two years. She focused on becoming a teacher for the most part. She had her first job at Bassett Hospital and then moved on as a teacher at Edmeston Central School, and now works at Worcester Central School.
Sherri France came to Cooperstown for family. She wanted to be close to family and friends. She mainly went to Otsego Lake in the Summer where her Aunt and Uncle have a camp that is also shared with her Uncle’s brother. Sherri France liked to water ski, fish, and also look for golf balls in a shallow area. Her and her family would also sit around the campfire and have s’mores. Also her and her brothers and sisters would go in the woods and have a little scavenger hunt. She said she will never forget camping with her family.
Sherri France has a favorite story about the Otesaga. She has never experienced it but, she was interested in how the Otesaga seemed to be haunted. But, then she told me that she has experienced some ghost life in the past. Sherri had once lived with one of her best friends in an abandoned house. They were old enough and wanted to be independent so, they dealt with it. One night they were just about to go to bed until, Sherri had heard a chair moving in the basement. She went down, and did not see anything, but the chair had certainly moved.
Sherri France has some words of wisdom that she would like to share. She said, “Always come back to where your memories are, always come back to home, always come back to family and friends, and enjoy every day that you have in Cooperstown or anywhere.”

One year, Sherri and her family went on a family vacation to Colorado in the year, 2015. They camped at Rocky Mountain National Park. Her and her daughter, Tori, climbed a smaller ridge top together on a cool morning while her husband, Duane, and son, Zach, climbed the second highest mountain in the whole Rocky Mountain National Park! Sherri and Tori still had a great time and so did Duane and Zach. Another year, Sherri and her family went on another vacation in 2016. They went to Maine and stayed at Acadia National Park in a cedar shake cabin. The whole family went and climbed the highest mountain in the national park.
