“Every Time Someone New Came From Out Of Town, They Brought Their Town With Them”.
Mrs. Dolores Coleman interviewed by Lucy Hayes
Dolores Coleman, a woman from the little village of Cooperstown and my Great Grandmother, made history in her life when she started two businesses- a phone answering service and a cake making business. But, answering phones isn’t all fun and games when you have to be available 24/7. Her cake making business started when one of her friends asked for a “shirt” cake. Now Dolores is enjoying life with her family and friends. She loves to walk to places, hang out with family, watch horse races, and relax. After Dolores lost her husband, the village planted a tree in his honor. She loves to sit by and look at the lake. She went to school in Cherry Valley, but has lived in Cooperstown for 71 of her 88 years. Dolores loved Cooperstown better the way it was, when she was younger. “Every time someone new came from out of town they brought their town with them,” said Dolores when asked about Main Street.
Dolores remembers when she lived on a farm on route 166, which helped her love of horses grow even stronger. She travels to Saratoga every summer to watch the horse races.
Her husband, Charles A. Coleman, got buried near the lake because he loved it so much. He and Dolores met at a dance down at the village library. Charles was a volunteer fireman in Cooperstown.
